What's New... April 2010

My 2010 competition season got off to a great start on the weekend with a first place finish at the Fitness Star Model Search in Mississauga! This was my first Fitness Star event as it is relatively new on the fitness scene, but is on its way to becoming one of the top contests in the industry. I competed in the Athletic Fitness Model category.

Even more rewarding was that two of the other competitors told me that I influenced them to enter their first fitness contest, through pictures of me on web sites of other shows I had won. It’s flattering to hear people say that, but it’s also very motivating. A big motivator for me is the idea of inspiring others – my personal training clients, dance students and fellow fitness competitors. Or even just someone out there who gets inspired to lose 10 pounds. So whenever I hear feedback like that, it really makes my day.

In my training leading up to this contest, I focused on adding some muscle to my shoulders and calves. These were areas that either I or others had identified as needing improvement. I really felt like I made some big improvements in those areas. I would encourage serious competitors to seek constructive criticism from experts – judges, photographers, elite competitors. It takes thick skin to hear about your weaknesses, but if you want to take it to the next level, you need to hear it and attack those areas. I’m really thankful that I have people like Sean Everingham from UFE, Doug Schneider from SAF, Glen Grant (fitness photographer), and others who are always willing to help in this regard. Sean also took the time to construct a detailed meal and exercise plan for the 15 weeks leading up to this show, and obviously it paid off with a great result.

After the show, my husband Kevin and I went to the Keg to celebrate. I went a little crazy with 2 appetizers, Caesar salad, steak, garlic mashed potatoes and cheesecake for dessert! After eating nothing but plain chicken breasts and broccoli for what seems like forever, it was a little hard on my system and I paid for it the next day!

For the next 2 weeks, I will relax my diet and workout routine a little (not quite to the extent of the Keg meal), and then get serious again leading up to the SAF Pro Elite Challenge at York University on June 26th.

I also make regular journal entries at girlsofsaf.com (see ad in the bottom right), so feel free to check out the site if you are interested in more frequent updates. It would be great if you could make it to one of my shows this year to cheer me on.

Thanks for your support.
